FIELD: preparation of catalyst for cleaning waste gases of internal combustion engines. SUBSTANCE: method includes preliminary high- temperature treatment of metal carrier, application of layer of aluminum hydroxide on ceramic or metal carrier followed by thermal dehydration, impregnation with aqueous solutions of ceramic, platinum and rhodium salts, drying and reducing. High-temperature treatment of metal carrier is performed at temperature of 800-1050 C; layer of aluminum hydroxide is applied at temperature of 20-25 C in aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide with metallic aluminum dissolved in said solution and reducing of catalyst is performed in aqueous solution of sodium boron hydride. EFFECT: enhanced activity of catalyst; facilitated procedure; low cost; improved quality of coat made from aluminum gamma-oxide; application of method for preparation of catalysts on ceramic carrier at number of passages reaching 900 per square inch. 4 cl, 2 tbl, 7 ex
