FIELD: measurement technology. SUBSTANCE: invention is related to measurement of degradation parameters of mechanical strength of fiber light guides and to evaluation of time of no-failure operation of light guides on basis of such parameters. Method predicting time of no-failure operation of light guides consists in evaluation of values of mechanical stress σs, acting on light guide in process of its operation, in loading of light guide by check tension σp1 in the course of time tp1 by rewinding under load of entire length in standard rewinding machine under normal conditions and in counting number Np1 of breaks per unit of light guide length, in repeat similar check loading with parameters σp2 tp2 of specially selected section of light guide under normal conditions, in counting number Np2 of breaks per unit of length of section of light guide, in formation of several statistically similar ensembles of specimens of light guide to carry out tests under normal and service conditions. In addition tests are conducted by loading specimens of light guide formed from ensembles by simultaneous stress of dynamic twisting and static axial tension σt under normal and service conditions, values of breaking stress are computed, median values σdp0,5 and σdsp0,5 of strength under rated and operational conditions, values np and ns of fatigue parameters under normal and service conditions are found, time ts of no-failure operation of light guide under service conditions is determined by calculation.
