FIELD: nuclear power engineering; spacing apart fuel elements in reactor fuel assemblies. SUBSTANCE: assembled spacer grid is annealed at temperature and vacuum, and within time period sufficient for removing internal stresses without oxidizing cells and rim whereupon temperature is reduced to value sufficient for producing shielding oxide film on rim and cell surfaces of spacer grid; then spacer grid is cooled down in oxidizing medium. Annealing is made at 580°±15°C for minimum 180 minutes at residual pressure of 2×10-3 Hg, then temperature is reduced to 500°±20°C and shielding oxide film is produced using atmospheric air as oxidizing medium. EFFECT: enhanced reliability and flexibility of spacer grids, reduced forces required for press-fitting fuel elements in them and reduced damage probability to fuel elements. 3 cl
