FIELD: radiation technology. SUBSTANCE: selenium-74 pellet is compressed to minimum 80% of theoretical density, placed in capsule whose inner volume is calculated to ensure free space to enable compensation for gage pressure without deformation built up inside sealed capsule during irradiation at minimal size of capsule and to provide for source-user desired specific rate of exposure dose of minimum 5•10-8 A/kg•mm3 of active part, then pellet is irradiated in reactor under conditions suited to attain specific activity of selenium-75 of minimum 1000 Ci/g and encapsulated in other capsule; first capsule is made of metals producing isotopes during irradiation in reactor whose gamma-ray energy is lower than that of selenium-75 or radioactive isotopes produced in the process have half-life shorter than an hour. EFFECT: enhanced safety in handling portable flaw detectors. 2 cl
