FIELD: petroleum processing. SUBSTANCE: invention, in particular, relates to processing heavy oil residues into fuel distillates and fuel oil by way of thermal conversion involving donor-solvent processes. Residual oil feedstock is first mixed with liquid activating additive and resulting mixture is then subjected to thermal conversion followed by isolation of desired products, said mixture being subjected to preliminary mechanical activation and exposed to magnetic-vortical field and said liquid activating additive being shale oil fraction 200-400 C containing at least 10.0 wt.% of hydrogen and representing 0.5 to 5% of the weight of feedstock. Thermal conversion is conducted at 410-450 C and pressure 2.5-5.0 MPa. Magnetic-vortical field with intensity 0.5-0.2 Tl is created by rotation of ferromagnetic needles and applied at temperature 80-150 C. EFFECT: enhanced processing efficiency, in particular reduced production cost. 4 cl, 2 tbl, 18 ex
