METHOD OF CONVERSION OF VANADIUM IRON Russian patent published in 2003 - IPC

FIELD: ferrous metallurgy; method of conversion of vanadium iron by duplex process. SUBSTANCE: at first stage of proposed method vanadium iron is poured into converter provided with refractory lining and is subjected to devanadiumization by oxygen blowing at addition of oxidants- coolants for obtaining carbon semi-finished product and conditioned vanadium slag; at second stage semi-finished product is subjected to processing in converter for obtaining molten steel. Amount of iron poured into converter exceeds amount of molten steel by 1.6-22 times. Carbon semi-finished product obtained at fist stage is tapped into two transfer ladles and is poured into two steel-making converters where it is subjected to processing for obtaining molten steel at preset content of carbon and other components. Iron is poured into converter in two stages, after pouring iron from first ladle, oxidants-coolants are added and metal is blown with oxygen; then, iron from second ladle is poured, oxidants- coolants are added and mixed metal is blown with oxygen, thus obtaining carbon semi-finished product and vanadium slag. Mass of refractory lining is reduced by magnitude equivalent to increase of amount of iron poured into converter. Use may be made of detachable oxygen converter. It is good practice to blow neutral or oxidizing gas or their mixture into bath through bottom or side surface of converter in devanadiumiaztion of iron. Proposed method ensures availability of spinel-like grains and presence of vanadium oxides, calcium oxides and ferric oxides.
