FIELD: organic chemistry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to method of synthesis of 4-aminobutyric acid (γ-amino- butyric acid) used for preparing neurotropic preparation aminalon and as intermediate substance for synthesis of some other pharmaceutical preparations, for example, picamilon. Method is realized by synthesis of 4- aminobutyric acid from α-pyrrolidone in its interaction with potassium hydroxide, conversion of formed 4- aminobutyric acid salt to free form of acid, water distillation off from reaction mass up to the ratio the end product to water in solution = 1 : (0.35-0.65), respectively, crystallization of 4-aminobutyric acid from an aqueous solution at temperature 15-35 C, filtration, washing out and drying the end product. The claimed method provides possibility to prepare product for a single step without recrystallization process carrying out with quality indices satisfying to requirements of ФC 42-1903-96, the yield 86-91% from α--pyrrolidone loaded in reaction and complete exclusion of organic solvent using at crystallization step.
