FIELD: instrumentation engineering, manufacture of glass articles, glass films, elements of integrated optics and porous glasses. SUBSTANCE: in accordance with procedure specimen of tested glass in the form of thin-walled capillary or set of thin-walled capillaries is subjected to thermal treatment at temperature higher than vitrification temperature, rate of change of geometric parameters of specimen at preset temperatures is measured and coefficient of surface tension is established by formula on basis of known data of temperature dependence of viscosity of glass where η- is viscosity of glass at specified temperature; υ- is velocity of reduction of length of capillary or set of capillaries; δ- is thickness of capillary wall; lo is initial length of specimen; k is constant coefficient. EFFECT: simplified measurement process, widened assortment of measured glasses and temperature measurement interval, determination of parameter under real conditions of usage of glass. 1 tbl
