METHOD OF SYNTHESIS OF PHTHALONITRILE Russian patent published in 2003 - IPC

FIELD: organic chemistry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the improved method of synthesis of phthalonitrile that is an intermediate substance used for synthesis of pigments, dyes, paints, lacquers, stabilizing agents and other materials. The process of synthesis of phthalonitrile is carried out by feeding preliminary heated ammonia to hot phthalo-air mixture containing phthalic anhydride, oxygen and inert gas by passing mixture over the stationary layer of Al₂O₃ as catalyst at temperature 310-350 C and in the concentration of phthalic anhydride 90 vol. %, not above, oxygen 5.6 vol. %, not above, and ammonia 10 vol. %, not above, followed by condensation of phthalonitrile, utilization of evolving ammonia-containing gases by absorption with industrial flow in phthalic anhydride production and neutralization by deep thermal oxidation. Method ensures to simplify process, reduce its cost, obtain product with real industrial yield, reduce outplay, make process to be as wasteless practically, reduce explosion hazard of process.
