FIELD: electrical engineering; outdoor high-voltage devices. SUBSTANCE: insulator has body, ribbed external polymeric shell placed on mentioned body, and two electrodes disposed on ends of mentioned body; mentioned shell is composite structure made of main layer and at least one outer solid layer of high-molecular siloxane rubber with inert filler; mentioned outer layer is made of low-molecular siloxane rubber without filler in the form of varnish coating so that thickness of mentioned outer layer makes up 0.001 to 0.5 of that of mentioned main layer disregarding height of ribs that forms ribbed external polymeric shell. Proposed surge limiter has at least one varistor pile disposed between mentioned electrodes in mentioned insulator body. Method for manufacturing insulator body boils down to developing roughness on outer surface of fiberglass plastic pin and degreasing the latter, placing it in mold heated to 125 C whose inner surface decides on ribbed configuration of outer surface. Then high- molecular siloxane rubber mixture is introduced in mold and cured at 115-185 C for organizing inner layer. Outer layer of shell is formed using varnishing technique.
