FIELD: ferrous metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: method involves treating steel with solid slag-forming mixture in the process of discharging steel into ladle; adding deoxidizing agents and alloying agents; after discharge of metal from unit, adding aluminum onto slag in ladle in an amount of 30-100 kg per 1 t of slag-forming mixture; treating metal and slag with inert gas upon expiration of 0.5-15 min, with inert gas flow rate being determined depending on consumption of slag-forming mixture and aluminum added onto slag. To increase refining capacity of covering slag, calcium-containing and/or carbon-containing materials may be added onto covering slag in ladle. Argon may be used as inert gas. EFFECT: increased refining capacity of covering slag during metal and slag processing with inert gas in ladle, increased extent of desulfuration and improved quality of metal. 5 cl, 1 tbl
