FIELD: application of coats by evaporation and condensation in vacuum; production of wear-resistant coats on cutting tools. SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes preheating of tool base to temperature below temperature of loss of strength at simultaneous cleaning of surface of base by bombardment of ions of material being applied by applying stress to base followed by application of adhesive precoat, 1.5-3 mkm thick made from elements of materials of coat and main coat by evaporation of starting material and sedimentation of its vapor on base at simultaneous reduction of stress applied to base and delivery of gas-reagent to chamber; used as starting material in applying the adhesive precoat is material including the elements of materials of base and main coat. EFFECT: enhanced resistance of cutting tools. 1 tbl
