FIELD: methods of application of wear-resistant coatings to cutting tools, applicable in metal machining. SUBSTANCE: method includes application of multilayer coatings to working surfaces of cutting tool by vacuum-plasma method. Upper layer of coating ensures minimal level of contact temperatures and amplitude of their variation during working and idle strokes of tool in process of intermediate cutting; and internal layers provide for high level of compression residual stresses in coating material and good adhesion to tool material.
