FIELD: processes for applying wear resistant coatings onto cutting tool, possibly in metal working industry branches. SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of applying multilayer coating by means of vacuum- plasma process; using as lower layer titanium carbonitride TiCN, using as intermediate layer titanium-zirconium nitride TiZrN and using as upper layer titanium nitride; at making three-layer coating for milling with high cutting speeds, applying layers with thickness 2 micrometers for receiving total thickness of coating equal to 6 micrometers; at making three-layer coating for milling with low cutting speeds applying layers with thickness 1.5 micrometers for receiving total thickness of coating equal to 4.5 micrometers.
