FIELD: processes for applying wear resistant coatings onto cutting tool, possibly in metal working industry branches. SUBSTANCE: method of vacuum-plasma application of multilayer coating comprises steps of using as lower layer titanium nitride TiN, using as intermediate layer titanium-zirconium nitride TiZrN, using as upper layer titanium nitride; applying upper layer of titanium nitride at low temperature of condensation and applying lower layer of titanium nitride at high temperature of condensation; at making three-layer coating for milling with high cutting speeds, applying coatings with thickness 2 micrometers at total thickness of coating 6 micrometers; at making three-layer coating for milling with low cutting speeds, applying coatings with thickness 1.5 micrometers at total thickness of coating 4.5 micrometers.
