FIELD: electric measurement technology, diagnostics facilities, exposure of defects of insulation elements in high-voltage electric power lines, location of position of faulty insulator in line. SUBSTANCE: method determining state of insulation elements includes reception of high-frequency radiation generated by faulty element, additional analysis of spectral characteristics of radiation such as distribution of intensity of high-frequency radiation relative to phase of voltage of commercial frequency ( 50 Hz ). Results of present measurements are compared with reference distributions generated for various points of location of faulty element and type of failure by way of calibration of power line or by calculation with use of mathematical model of line that takes into consideration its topology, change of spectrum of signal while it passes through line from point of discharge to measurement point for different frequencies and types of faults.
