FIELD: ferrous metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: method involves blasting bath of furnace with oxygen; introducing coolant into zones of contact of oxygen flow with bath surface five minutes after initiating oxygen blasting process, with coolant being introduced in an amount of 800- 1,000 kg/hour per 1.000 cu. m of oxygen/hour. Coolant may be iron-ore pellets or slag-forming materials. EFFECT: reduced metal melting loss and power consumption per ton of melted steel due to reduced metal surface temperature in the process of blasting bath with oxygen.
