FIELD: high-temperature devices of nuclear power and space technologies, materials technology of refractory metals and thermal physics of heat carriers from liquid alkali metals. SUBSTANCE: method includes application of protective coating to device external surface found in external vacuum space. Protective coating is used in form of strip from foil of getter-active material. Prior to application of protective coating, applied successively to one surface of strip are two protective layers with material of the first layer possessing coefficient of linear expansion equaling 0.7 to 1.3 of linear expansion coefficient of foil material, and material of the second layer featuring low permeability of active gases of external vacuum medium. Protective coating is applied to device external surface by tight winding of strip with protective layers facing outside. Foil material may be used in form of titanium or its alloy, niobium or its alloy, tantalum or its alloy. Material of the first protective layer may be used in form of aluminum oxide, and material of the second protective layer in form of chromium-nickel spinel.
