FIELD: analytical instrumentation engineering. SUBSTANCE: chamber has two compartments; one of them is evacuated and electron source is placed therein; other compartment is, essentially, reaction chamber of ionic mobility spectrometer. X-ray quanta produced in evacuated compartment anode due to bombardment by electrons are free to penetrate through partition separating two compartments. This partition is impenetrable for electrons emitted by source and for gas molecules. X-rays are converted into low- energy quanta and/or photoelectrons in one or more conversion layers in reaction compartment which are capable of ionizing air components with high degree of efficiency. EFFECT: enhanced service life of ionization chamber. 18 cl, 4 dwg, 6 tbl
