FIELD: mechanical engineering; internal combustion engines. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to devices and methods of heating of engine systems at low ambient temperatures. Proposed method of heating of diesel-generator plants of diesel locomotives comes to provision of excitation of traction generator according to standard scheme, then generator is changed for operation as electric motor, fuel delivery into cylinders is cut off by switching off locking magnet coil of crankshaft speed governor and then tolerable temperature levels in diesel engine systems depending on ambient temperature is maintained by changing crankshaft speed provided by changing voltage in armature and starting windings. To prevent accumulation of motor oil in diesel engine exhaust duct, starting of diesel engine is carried out periodically every 1.2 - 1.5 h of heating by connecting coil of locking magnet of crankshaft speed governor and operating diesel engine at no-load for 0.15-0.2 h. Proposed method does not required modification of engine systems, idling of engine for warming up the systems is not necessary, neither is starting from storage batteries, and provision is made for charging the latter according to standard scheme together with heating of water, oil and fuel.
