FIELD: environment protection. SUBSTANCE: method involves selecting indicator group, preparing reference media divided into quality classes, determining indicator species capable of existing in reference media quality class range, withdrawing from a medium all available species from indicator group. Indicator species are detected for each quality class capable of existing in reference media quality class range and medium quality class is determined from maximum value of total indicator class significance. Self-cleaning capability of a medium is evaluated by means of additional removals of indicators from the medium and determining total indicator class significance to the moment the maximum total indicator class significance value and the greatest value following it appear in the neighboring medium quality class range areas. Self- cleaning capability of a medium is judged when the greatest value is disposed in the medium class level worsening zone relative to the maximum value. EFFECT: usability as express-method in single-stage examination of environment; low cost; obtainable comparable results concerning ecological quality and economical importance of media under study. 2 cl, 3 dwg
