FIELD: drilling fluids. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to manufacture of gel powders for drilling muds, molding blends, and iron ore pellets. Method of invention is characterized by that crushed bentonite clay with moisture content 15-45% is ground on mill until specified-size powder is obtained, which is simultaneously dried in grinding zone with air flow preheated to 80-300 C. Grinding product is bentonite powder with moisture content 6-15%. EFFECT: improved quality of gel powder due to improved physicochemical and colloidal-chemical properties and considerably reduced consumption of powder in preparation of drilling muds, molding blends, and iron ore pellets. 1 tbl, 4 ex
