In the method of producing modified bentonite for drilling mud, which includes moistening crushed bentonite clay to a given moisture content, mixing it with sodium carbonate with heating air, drying, grinding, using air heated to 80–300 °C, mixing, grinding and drying are carried out in a mill, which makes it possible to blow hot gases for drying and removal of crushed dried clay from it, to obtain modified to moisture content of 9–17 % of modified bentonite clay with content of particles with size of less than 0.075 mm of not less than 80 % vol. and characterized by composition, wt. %: SiO₂ 52.413–62.35; Al₂O₃ 15.64–18.60; CaO 2.599–3.04; Cl 0.387–0.46; Cr₂O₃ 0.037–0.04; Fe₂O₃ 4.924–5.86; K₂O 2.004–2.38; MgO 2.396–2.85; MnO 0.089–0.11; Na₂O 2.788–3.32; P₂O₅ 0.135–0.16; SO₃ 0.626–0.75; TiO₂ 0.626–0.75.
