FIELD: radio communications engineering. SUBSTANCE: proposed method and system are used for computing time of signal passage in forward and backward directions so as to find distance between mobile radio station and base radio station (BS0, BS1, BS2) using true values of time of signal passage over ascending and descending communication lines (for instance T-up and T-down). This does not require absolute reference synchronization. Mobile and base stations transmit messages concerning local time of dispatch and arrival to service center 203 disposed in mobile network by means of signals transmitted over ascending and descending communication lines and compute true time lengths of signal passage (T-up and T- down). Distance D between mobile and base stations can be calculated from formula D = s (T-up + T-down)/2, where s is light speed. Distances D1, D2, and D3 of at least three base stations whose disposition is known can be used in triangulation algorithm for locating mobile station. EFFECT: facilitated location of mobile terminal operating in dialog mode using digital or analog data exchange channel of mobile radio link. 25 cl, 3 dwg
