GAMMA-RAY SOURCE Russian patent published in 2004 - IPC

Abstract RU 2221293 C2

FIELD: ionizing radiation sources. SUBSTANCE: gamma-ray source has selenium-75 forming combination of tolerable metal or metals in the form of stable compound, alloy, or mixed metal phase. Used as tolerable metal or metals are those whose neutron irradiation does not cause emission of products capable of producing permanent radiation background. Prior art for gamma-ray source has encased selenium-74 forming combination of tolerable metal or metals in the form of stable alloy, compound, or mixed metal phase. Case and its content are subject to irradiation by neutrons causing transformation of at least certain part of selenium-74 into selenium- 75. Proposed method for manufacturing gamma-ray source involving mixing of selenium-74 with metal or mixed metals of group incorporating vanadium, molybdenum, rhodium, niobium, thorium, titanium, nickel, lead, bismuth, platinum, palladium, and aluminum provides for producing desired end product. Then mixture is heated thereby causing reaction between its components whereupon product of reaction is irradiated, and at least part of selenium-74 is transformed into selenium-75. EFFECT: reduced manufacturing cost due to reducing reactor volume. 15 cl, 4 dwg
