FIELD: electrothermy; melting mineral components and conducting chemical reactions in condensed phase. SUBSTANCE: electromagnetic process reactor that can be used, for example, to melt glass and basalt rock to produce heat-insulating materials from them has reaction chamber with bottom, side walls, and cover, charge material inlet and product output units, bar electrodes disposed in reaction chamber, and electromagnet made in the form of closed yoke around reaction chamber with three symmetrical pole shoes mounting cross-field series windings; one lead of each winding is connected to respective electrode and other one, to power supply. Reaction chamber is equipped with three bar electrodes installed at equal distance from chamber in parallel with its longitudinal axis and spaced 120 deg. apart; reactor is supplied with power from adjustable three-phase thyristor unit that runs as power supply. Reaction chamber may be of hexahedral-section shape and its side walls may be made of longitudinal water- or air-cooled nonmagnetic steel sections; product output unit is mounted above reaction chamber bottom. Proposed method for starting electromagnetic process reactor includes charging reaction chamber with crushed material to be handled at the same time organizing layer of finely dispersed electricity conducting material such as graphite between crushed charge layers to close mentioned three bar electrodes followed by connecting mentioned power supply and gradually building up current load. EFFECT: simplified design, enhanced starting and operating reliability, facilitated power control and starting of reactor. 8 cl, 3 dwg
