FIELD: computer engineering; optical processing of documents. SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes illumination of document being analyzed by means of light source, conversion of reflected light flux into video signal, its display on monitor, and analysis of fault detected. After analyzing image displayed on monitor fault area is detected and confined, fault image is magnified by means of lens, video signal obtained is analyzed by comparing with undistorted image of document, separated fault is classified, and configuration of filters and illuminators is formed in compliance with this classification and with fault list program incorporated in personal computer by controlling light sources of different spectral characteristics and selecting set of light filters optimal for fault detection; document being analyzed is processed by mentioned configuration of illuminators and filters simultaneously or sequentially, image obtained is converted into video signal and re-displayed on monitor, then image obtained is archived. Device implementing this method has illuminator and means for converting optical radiation into visual image. Illuminator is, essentially, set of different lights whose outputs are optically coupled with visual field; means for converting optical beam into visible image is made in the form of television camera incorporating variable focal length lens; newly introduced are also movable carriage with set of input optical filters, personal computer, video processor, monitor, software processing and image archiving unit; inputs of all device units are connected to control panel; television camera and stage with viewing window are placed in shading box.
