FIELD: analytical methods. SUBSTANCE: in a gas-phase method of determining osmium(VIII) comprising distilling osmium(VIII) from solution, sorbent entrapment, reduction into osmium(III), converting it into complex compound, and measuring coefficient of diffuse reflection, a novelty is entrapping OsO4 from gas phase by silica gel sorbent chemically modified with mercapto groups and measuring diffuse reflection coefficient of osmium(III) complex with mercapto groups covalently fixed on silica gel surface. Method is characterized by that concentrating cartridge located at the reaction bottle outlet contains above-indicated sorbent, which efficiently (99.9%) recovers osmium(VIII) from gas phase, and recovered osmium(VIII) is reduced into osmium(III) on the surface of that sorbent to form yellow-brown colored coordination compounds. Intensity of sorbent coloration linearly depends on concentration of osmium on the surface of sorbent. EFFECT: increased sensitivity of assessment. 4 ex
