SUBSTANCE: proposed internal combustion engine has working volume H. Catalytic converter is installed after engine to neutralize exhaust gases. Catalytic converter has geometric surface, area O, efficiency E of conversion of at least one toxic component of exhaust gases into harmless components and at least one cellular member. All cellular members of converter have summary volume V. According to invention to invention, said volume V should be chosen to at least 0.6 of working volume H, and geometric surface should have area O to provide efficiency E of catalytic converter exceeding 98%. Cellular member is preferably metal member made of partially structurized or profiled metal sheets assembled into pack and/or coiled and forming channels separated by walls whose mean thickness d is maximum 40 mcm. Number of channels per cross section area unit of cellular member and expressed in form of number of cells of cellular structure per square inch is not less than 600 cells/sq. inch.
EFFECT: provision of non-expansive small-capacity cellular members.
