FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy; production of aluminum by electrolysis of cryolite alumina melts.
SUBSTANCE: proposed cathode unit includes lined cathode casing and hearth made from carbon blocks; hearth is provided with transversal passages formed by external surfaces of carbon blocks and provided with refractory conducting coat wetted with aluminum. Hearth is additionally provided with longitudinal passages formed by side walls of cathode casing carbon lining and shoulders of end parts of hearth carbon blocks. Passages in hearth are communicated over periphery of cathode unit shaft; coat is made over entire surface of hearth. Width of passages over periphery of shaft is equal to 1.2-2.3 of width of carbon block and their depth is equal to 0.2-0.4 of height of carbon block. Coat is made from titanium diboride.
EFFECT: increased service life of electrolyzer; improved parameters of aluminum production process.
