FIELD: electrometallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to carbon-based composite materials used in electrometallurgy as part of electrodes, in particular, in the electrolytic production of aluminium and can be used in the manufacture of cathode blocks and ramming mixture for mounting the cathode device of an aluminium electrolyser. Composite carbon-containing material is obtained by mixing carbon components with metal-containing and boron-containing components, followed by moulding and heat treatment. The carbonaceous components are mixed with refractory metal oxide in an amount of 8 to 18 wt.% and boron oxide in an amount up to 28 wt.% followed by electrochemical reduction of oxides to metal borides and carbides in the volume of the cathode of the operating electrolyser.
EFFECT: invention provides creation of carbon-containing material with increased erosion resistance and improved wetting.
