FIELD: gas and petroleum processing.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for decomposing and utilizing hydrogen sulfide, which can be employed for production of hydrogen and sulfur from hydrogen sulfide and also for freeing gas mixtures of hydrogen sulfide. Process comprises passing hydrogen sulfide-containing gas through bed of solid material capable of decomposing hydrogen sulfide to form hydrogen and sulfur-containing compounds on the material surfaces. Decomposition stage is performed under chemosorption-catalytic conditions at temperature below melting point of sulfur to produce hydrogen and on-surface chemosorbed sulfur compounds. Catalyst is reactivated at temperature below melting point of sulfur and regenerated at temperature above melting point of sulfur.
EFFECT: reduced decomposition temperature, for example at room temperature, and eliminated necessity of frequent regeneration of catalyst after each chemosorption stage.
