Method for preparing hydrogen and elemental sulfur from hydrogen sulfide involves passing the parent hydrogen sulfide-containing gas through layer of solid material that is able to adsorb hydrogen sulfide and to evolve hydrogen to form solid sulfur-containing compounds on surface of material, periodic regeneration of layer by decomposition of indicated sulfur-containing compounds and evolving elemental sulfur vapor. Passing the parent hydrogen sulfide-containing gas through layer of solid material that is able to activate hydrogen sulfide is carried out at temperature below 200 C and to regenerate solid material by passing hydrogen sulfide-free regenerating gas or that in the concentration below than in the parent hydrogen-containing gas. Except for, passing regenerating gas is carried out at temperature 350 C, not above. Invention provides to attain high degree of decomposition of hydrogen sulfide and can be used for production of hydrogen and elemental sulfur from hydrogen sulfide and for purification of hydrogen sulfide from industrial waste gases.
