FIELD: powder metallurgy, namely manufacture of metal powder articles with high strength of core and hard compacted surface, possibly used in machine engineering for making gear wheels, bearing assemblies and so on.
SUBSTANCE: method for compacting surface layer of carbon-containing article formed of iron base powder comprises steps of decarbonizing surface layer of article for softening it; mechanically compacting prepared soft surface layer. Sintered powder article made of iron base alloy according to invention contains 0.3 -1.0 mass % of carbon in its core and 0.3 -1.5 mass %, preferably 0.5 -0.9 mass % of carbon in surface hardened layer.
EFFECT: possibility for making article whose core has high rupture strength and yield limit and whose surface has high hardness and improved fatigue properties.
