FIELD: inorganic compounds technologies.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to hydrogen sulfide degradation processes and removal of hydrogen sulfide from gas emissions. Process according to invention comprises passing initial gas containing hydrogen sulfide and oxygen through fixed granulated catalyst bed containing porous oxide-supported iron oxide. Catalyst granules are shaped as cylinders, rings, spheres, or any volume forms with equivalent diameter at least 5 mm. Porous oxide carrier is characterized by effective oxygen diffusion coefficient value 4·10-6 to 1.4·10-5 m2/sec as measured under reaction conditions. As initial gas, air- or oxygen-mixed Claus process emission gases are used, which, prior to be mixed with air or oxygen, are subjected to hydrogenation to convert sulfur dioxide and other sulfur impurities into hydrogen sulfide. To reduce concentration of carbon dioxide in Claus plant emission gases, air feed into Claus furnace is lowered below stoichiometric value.
EFFECT: increased selectivity of hydrogen sulfide oxidation and reduced emission of sulfur dioxide into atmosphere.
