FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used for connecting wide and thick strips, thickness from 8 to 15 mm, in continuous metallurgical units. Butt-welding machine is furnished with movable bedframe travel sensor connected with control system. Algorithm of operation of mechanisms in machine control system makes it possible, after successive welding, separation of clamps and beginning of transportation of strip in line, to move movable bedframe through half of preset distance between jaws. Having machined the roll in unit, jaws of clamps movable bedframe are moved to each other and rear end of roll strip is thrusted against the jaws by reversing the line. Strips is clamped in fixed clamp jaws in this position. Movable bedframe is moved to provide initial distance simultaneously separating jaws of its clamp, and front end of strip of following roll is thrusted against rear end of strip of preceding roll. Strips are clamped in jaws of movable clamp and are welded.

EFFECT: increased capacity of metallurgical unit owing to reduced time taken for butt-joining of strips, stabilization of quality of weld seam.
