FIELD: refractory materials.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for preparing fibrous mullite, in particular from topaz concentrate. The latter is granulated and fired at 1100-1350°C by blowing gas heat carrier at 1400-1700°C through layer of topaz granules, said heat carrier being composed of silicon tetrachloride, 0.1-5 vol %, hydrogen fluoride, 1-15 vol %, and normally moistened air, the rest. Firing of granules is conducted under heat carrier-granules countercurrent conditions.
EFFECT: elaborated practically feasible continuous process producing mullite containing no foreign phases.
