FIELD: optical instrument engineering.

SUBSTANCE: device can be used for measurement of polarization characteristic of light passed through optical active and double-refracting matters. Device has light source composed polarization filter mounted onto flat springs; filter is made of polarization filters adjoining along line to make close connection; planes of transmission of filters equal to 90°. Device also has dish filled with tested petroleum product and placed into magnetic or electric field; quarter-wave plate, simple polarization filter, photoreceiver, electronic unit for processing and indicating results of measurements. Planes of transmission of parts of composed polarization filter make angles of 0° and 90° with direction of action of magnetic or electric fields. Quarter-wave plate is mounted in such a way that its "quick" axis makes angle of +=45° with direction of action of magnetic or electric fields. There is additional polarization filter between light source and composed polarization filter. Plane of transmission of additional polarization filter coincides with plane of essential polarization of light source and it also coincides with bisector of angle between planes of polarization of parts of composed filter. Angle of turn of plane of polarization, caused by natural or induced optical activity, can be measured as well as phase difference between components of polarized light induced by influence of lateral magnetic or electric fields n sample of petroleum product.
