FIELD: mechanical engineering.

SUBSTANCE: method comprises preliminary preparing of the article surface, setting the article and conducting material made of zirconium or zirconium-based alloy in the zone of working, evacuating air from the zone of working, applying a negative 150-400-V potential to the article and to the conducting material, exciting vacuum arc in the conducting material, ion bombarding, and cleaning. The surface of the conducting article is then heated by ions, and ions of conducting material are collected and diffuse at the surface of the article in the reaction gas at a temperature of the article surface that is lower than the temperature of destruction of material to define a coating 8-25 μm in thickness. Before exciting the vacuum arch on the conducting material, the article is bombed with ions of inert gas.

EFFECT: enhanced fire resistance.
