FIELD: measuring technique.
SUBSTANCE: method comprises calculating the electric capacity of at least one reference wire pair whose output end is shortened on a resistor, calibrating the reference wire pair by means of disconnecting it from the resistor and measuring the capacity of the disconnected reference wire pair, calculating the specific electric capacity per a unit length, and monitoring the value of current in the reference wire pair. When the value of current drops down to a reference value, the initial and terminal voltages in the reference wire pair are measured. The distance to the site of the breaking in the cable is determined from the formula presented.
