FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy, namely designs of electrolyzers for producing magnesium and chlorine.
SUBSTANCE: electrolyzer includes lengthwise and end vertical walls forming bath divided by means of partition with V-shaped ducts by collecting cell and electrolysis compartment. In electrolysis compartment alternatively anodes and frame type cathodes are arranged while cathodes are mounted as boundary electrodes. In electrolysis compartment end walls parallel relative to long sides of cathodes have protrusions hanging over upper edges of cathodes; distance between said protrusion and working surface of anode consist of 1 - 4.5 of inter-electrode spacing. Protrusions are made of material resistant in medium of melt magnesium and electrolyte, for example from melt-cast material such as fluor-phlogopite or low-cement refractory concrete.
EFFECT: increased magnesium yield by electric current due to improved output of magnesium from working compartment to collecting cell.
