FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to methods of application of wear resistant coats to a cutting tool and can be used in metal working. A multy layer coat is applied by means of the vacuum-plasma application method. A lower layer is applied with nitride or carbonitride of a composition of titanium, molybdenum and aluminium at a ratio of mas.%: titanium 78.7-78.9; molybdenum 7.0-7.3, aluminium 13.1-14.0; while an upper layer is applied with nitride or carbonitride of a composition of titanium, molybdenum and zirconium at a ratio of mas.%: titanium 72.8-75.1; molybdenum 6.9-7.2 and zirconium 18-20. Application of coat layers is performed with three cathodes assembled horizontally in one plane. The first cathode is composed out of titanium and aluminium. The second cathode is composed out of titanium and zirconium and is located counter the first one. The third cathode is composed out of titanium and molybdenum and is inserted between the first two.
EFFECT: increased efficiency of a cutting tool.
