SUBSTANCE: method for optimisation of engine braking effect in unit (1) of drive, in particular, for use in transport means in working condition that corresponds to mode of braking by engine retarder, utilisation turbine (5) is actuated in working point (II), which is characterised by maximum permissible limit number of rotations nmax-5 of utilisation turbine (5) at minimum transient moment M5, and in working condition that corresponds to mode of partial load or mode of forced idle run, utilisation turbine (5) is actuated in working point (I), which is characterised by minimum number of rotations nmin-5 and minimum perceived moment Mmin-5, at that establishment of both working points is realised via fluid coupling (8), which is suitable for functioning to one characteristic, transient moment of which for most part of rotary speeds difference that characterises slippage, with account of transmission ratio of transmission elements in transmission unit (16) to utilisation turbine (5) corresponds to minimum moment MMin-5, transmitted from utilisation turbine (5) or perceived by it. Drive unit is considered with internal combustion engine (3), in which fluid coupling (8) is suitable for functioning to one characteristic, transient moment of which, with account of transmission ratio in transmission unit (16), corresponds to minimum moment MMin-5, perceived by utilisation turbine (5) or transmitted from it, for most part of slippage area characterised by ratio of rotary speeds between the primary and secondary disks.
