FIELD: physics, measurement.

SUBSTANCE: application: for measurement of material grain average size by surface acoustic waves. Elastic waves are radiated in product serially at two frequencies f and fj by transducers of elastic waves, signals passed through at these frequencies are received, and their amplitudes are measured, at that pulses of surface waves are radiated, passed signals of surface waves are received by the same transducers that are located on the same axis with the radiating ones at the distance l from each other, additionally signal that passed through at f frequency is received by transducer located at distance nl from the radiating one, the one that passed at frequency fj by transducer located at l/n distance from the radiating one, at that fj=nf, and n is integer number, and n>1, and average size of grain is calculated according to appropriate mathematical formula.

EFFECT: provision of possibility to measure average size of grain in surface layer of material, and also no necessity to use reference samples.
