FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to detecting subsurface items by optical location in the infrared range. Measurement of excess temperature is carried out in the method. After carrying out numerical simulation of the thermal processes, which are taking place in the ground during its heating with thermal radiation, according to the data of actual measurement by means of infrared thermography are restored the values of the thermophysical properties of each point of the ground being simulated. Processing thermographs on the algorithm of the identification of thermophysical properties, a thermal tomogram (image, in which each pixel contains a value of thermophysical properties of an item within the selected layer depth) is formed. Decision making about a hidden object in the structure of the ground is carried out, based on the value of the thermophysical properties of the depth of heat penetration, using a mathematical apparatus for processing a thermograph in time and space.

EFFECT: method makes it possible to determine the depth of occurrence of the object, its geometric dimensions, and on the basis of the thermophysical properties classify the material of the object.
