FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: method is based on physical principles which are based on difference in thermophysical properties of soil and the object hidden in the soil: when soil is heated with thermal radiation using infrared thermography equipment, the soil either heats or cools faster depending on the material of the object. Further, values of thermophysical properties of each point of the modelled soil are restored. For this purpose, thermal processes taking place in the soil are numerically modelled based on data of natural measurements taken using infrared thermography equipment. Based on values of thermophysical properties on the depth of heat, presence of an object in the soil structure is determined using a mathematical tool for time and spatial processing of thermographs. By processing the thermograph using an algorithm for identifying thermophysical properties, a thermal tomographic image (an image in which each pixel contains a value of thermophysical properties of the object within a layer selected on the depth) can be formed. The method enables to determine the occurrence depth of the object, its geometrical dimensions and the type of the material based on thermophysical properties.
