FIELD: physics; measurement.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to ultrasonic gauges of level of liquids and quick materials in tanks on petrol-filling stations and petroleum storage depots, as well as in petrochemical, food and other industries. A second threshold device, whose threshold voltage exceeds the threshold voltage of the first threshold device, is used. The time interval between operation of the first and second threshold devices is measured. The time interval between operation of the first threshold device and the onset of the echo pulse is calculated. The time interval for propagation of the ultrasonic pulse in the controlled medium is then determined and the distance to the reflecting surface is determined by multiplying the calculated time interval with propagation speed of ultrasound in the controlled medium. This distance is then displayed.
EFFECT: compensation of measurement error of an ultrasonic level gauge, arising from presence of an uncontrolled time interval between the onset of the echo pulse and operation of the threshold device.
