SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a disc, more specifically to a recording/playback device for efficient control of the reading-modifying-writing (RMW) process for logic overwriting (LOW), reading/recording method for this, and an information storage medium for this. Substitution data for updating data recorded on the information storage medium are recorded in the area for substitution during logic overwriting (LOW); substitution data for substituting a defect, arising on the storage medium, are recorded in the area for substituting defect; and if the defect arises in the initial unit, recorded in a pre-determined area of the storage medium during the reading-modifying-writing (RMW) process for LOW, of at least partial data of the initial unit, the substitution unit, which substitutes the initial unit, is recorded in the area substituting using LOW, and a defect element list (DFL) is formed, which includes information on location of the initial unit and information on location of substitution unit, so as to indicate the state of substitution.
