SUBSTANCE: device has a reading unit which reads data from the data storage medium and a controller which controls the reading unit in order to read a substitution unit from the data storage medium using a defect list element. The defect list element contains information on the location of the initial unit and information on location of the substitution unit for substituting the initial unit. The substitution unit is a recordable unit for substituting the initial unit using LOW substitution when a defect is detected in the initial unit during LOW substitution using a read-modify-write (RMW) process.
