SUBSTANCE: invention is related to electro- and magnetooptical devices. Substance of invention consists in the fact that layer of cholesteric liquid crystal is applied, and variation of characteristics of light wave that passed through it is provided by induction of anharmonicity in spiral distribution of director with the help of electric or magnetic field directed perpendicularly to axis of spiral.

EFFECT: invention makes it possible to realise small times required for switch-over of light polarisation characteristics at high contrast and wide range of their variation under conditions of low controlling fields.
